Volvo's Answer To The BMW iX3 Is Coming Soon

Volvo XC60’s Electric Sibling Is On The Way

Swedish automaker Volvo has provided another look at its upcoming EX60 EV, a midsize crossover that will be positioned alongside the existing XC60. The solitary image posted to Instagram shows a detailed look at the left-side taillight of the EV after a brief glimpse of the crossover’s rear end was revealed three months ago during the launch of the ES90 electric sedan. Skip the just before the 25-minute mark in the video below to see what appears to be a clay model of the EX60. Like other Volvo models, the taillight is oriented vertically on either side of the rear window, and like other EX models specifically, a C-shaped lower taillight element frames the top half of the tailgate. In short, this will be instantly recognizable as a Volvo.

XC60 Confirmed For 2026 Debut

Previous comments from Volvo had indicated that the new crossover would arrive for the 2027 model year, and the automaker has now confirmed that by saying that the EX60 is “coming early 2026.” It will be underpinned by the new SPA3 platform, which is an evolution of the SPA2 found under the current EX90 and ES90 EVs. As a modular platform, it’s expected to provide production cost savings for vehicles of various sizes, and Volvo claims additional savings in cost and weight will be realized by the use of structural battery packs. Inside, the EX60 will be the first car in the world to feature Volvo’s new multi-adaptive seatbelt, which adjusts according to your weight and posture to maximize safety in the event of a crash.

The automotive industry is still some way from reaching price parity between combustion-powered and all-electric cars, and we can look at Volvo’s existing range to get a feel for what an electric take on the XC60 would cost. The Volvo XC90 starts at $59,745, while its electric EX90 alternative starts at $81,290. Similarly, the S90 has a base MSRP of $59,495 and the ES90 is expected to start around $70,000. With that in mind, as well as the XC60’s base price of $48,345, we expect the EX60 to hover around the $60,000 mark in base form.

Clearly, there’s still a long way to go before buying an EV becomes a decision that does not take pricing into account, but we should also note that rivals are not much different. The Audi Q6 e-tron starts at $63,800 and Porsche’s Macan Electric starts at $75,300. The BMW iX3 is also expected to be priced between $60,000 and $70,000 before options, so Volvo will have plenty of competition. We’ll report back once more information from Gothenburg.
