We absolutely love the new MX-5 Miata 35th Anniversary Edition. With its classy burgundy and tan color scheme and incredible driving dynamics, the latest offering from Mazda will be a massive hit for many reasons.
According to Mazda, it is already a huge hit. And you’ll probably never own one.

The MX-5 Miata Anniversary Edition is incredibly scarce
As car manufacturers are wont to do, Mazda has a limited run for the 35th Anniversary Edition of its MX-5. The automaker limited production to a meager 300 units for the United States market.
That’s right, you have a one in 300 chance of owning a brand new Miata MX-5.
Mazda won’t explain why it is only making a few hundred builds for its largest market, and the waitlist to own a 35th Anniversary Edition is already full. That means that over 300 people have requested one from dealers.
This isn’t the first time Mazda has done this either. Previous anniversary edition Miatas were “sold out” hours after the initial announcement.

Can you import a Miata MX-5 Anniversary Edition?
Probably not!
You may have a better chance of buying one in Canada, where it’s limited to 230 units. That’s fewer than the United States, but we’d venture a soft-top Miata is less attractive to car buyers in colder temperatures.
Mazda is also selling the MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition in Japan. It doesn’t seem to be limiting production for that market, and you can order one with a soft or hard top!
The issue with ordering from Japan is that it will be a JDM vehicle, which might not comply with US road regulations, and the wheel will also be on the right side of the car.

What you should do if you really want a 35th Anniversary Edition Mazda MX-5 Miata
Get a hold of your local dealer as soon as you can. Express to them that you’re serious about owning an anniversary edition MX-5. This won’t bump you up the list, but conveying your passion to a dealership lets them know you’re ready to buy if everyone else is hemming and hawing.
Pre-orders often create a fever pitch, and many on pre-order lists fail to complete a purchase. The Miata is a niche vehicle with a dedicated fan base, and the 35th Anniversary Edition is sure to sell out, but expect that some of those ahead of you on the list are just holding their place in line.
We have no idea how many total interested buyers are on the waitlist. We only know all 300 vehicles in the United States are technically spoken for.

Final thoughts
Getting a 35th Anniversary Edition MX-5 Miata is a long shot, but it’s worth that shot. It’s a gorgeous vehicle that’s a ton of fun to drive.
Something this scarce is destined to be a collector’s item. If you take great care of it but decide later that you don’t want it anymore, we’re sure you could sell it quickly by attending a car show or contacting a Mazda enthusiast group in your area.
