Special V8-Powered BMW 8 Series On Its Way Soon

The limited model could be the 8’s last hurrah

BMW has gone back and forth between its 6 Series and 8 Series flagship coupes for several decades, never selling the pair simultaneously for an extended period of time. A year ago, rumors circulated that the current 8 Series would be discontinued to make way for a new 6 Series. While the second half of that is uncertain, we do know that the current 8 is set to go out of production at some point next year. Before that happens, a special edition of the 8 Series will arrive this year, and it could be something of a final edition for the upscale GT.

Special Edition To Be Based On M850i

Since the high-performance M8 has already gone out of production, the new special edition will be based on the next best thing, which is the M850i. That’s according to a recent interview Bimmer Today had with BMW M Boss, Frank van Meel. The interview is in German, but the auto-dubbing function on YouTube can be used to watch it.

What’s unclear is if the special edition will extend to all three body styles of the M850i, which comes in Coupe, Convertible, and Gran Coupe forms. Regardless of which body styles receive the special edition, we expect bespoke trim, unique colors, and possibly a few extra features.

What’s less likely to change is performance, not that the M850i needs more of that. Its 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 makes 523 horsepower, meaning the coupe can hit 60 mph in only 3.6 seconds.

The price of this special 8 Series will definitely be deep into six figures, as the base M850i Coupe already costs $109,400.

More Special Editions Coming Before The End Of 2025

According to van Meel, we can expect more limited-run BMWs before the end of the year. “A few other things are happening,” he said, without divulging further details.

The 3 Series celebrates 50 years this year, so that’s a good candidate for a special edition, which has already been seen in markets like Australia.

Along with the 3 Series, the X5, X7, and Z4 are the other BMWs that have been around for the longest in their current generations. All could possibly receive a special edition to drive interest in them. The Z4 is expected to stick around until May 2026 before being discontinued.
